Can drywall joint compound be used to fill small gaps when installing self stick tiles over linoleum?

I am going to install self stick tiles over linoleum and I have a few spots that need filled. I was wondering if drywall joint compound would work to fill in the small gaps. The room where the tiles are being installed is a bathroom.
