How long does it take for lima beans to germinate and sprout?

I have been told that lima beans would be a better option for my students to plant and take home to their mom for Mother's Day. Do they even bloom? I am looking for some flowers, but I guess that those beans can be useful, especially if they ended up producing other beans. I can make it into more than just a Mother's Day gift, but a project for them to watch over the course of time to evaluate it's growth. Should I put holes in the bottom of the milk cartons for drainage? I am sorry I guess I have many questions.
